On Field Management of Injuries

Preparation

  • Access to communication, cell phone  and 911 availability
  • On-site transportation, access to ambulance
  • Emergency equipment, back-board, tape, c-collar
  • Inspect playing surface, is it safe?
  • Personnel equipment in good working order, helmets, mouthguards

Rules on the Field

  • Do not move an injured player if unconscious or complaining of neck pain or numbness until medical help arrives
  • When in doubt leave the helmet on
  • ABC rules, Airway, Breathing, Circulation
  • Airway – head tilt, chin lift, open mouth, remove mouthguard
  • Breathing – if not breathing, mouth - to - mouth
  • Circulation – check for pulse, if no pulse CPR

Exam

  • Stabilize the spine first, no movement of the head, hold head stable
  • Leave helmet and shoulder pads on unless airway is bad
  • If airway in question, cut away facemask
  • If unconscious, neck pain, or numbness in extremities, stabilize head
  • Athlete is strapped and taped to backboard, head stabilized with pillows
  • Elevate body in children to avoid forward flexion of helmet
  • Evaluate for signs of concussion and follow concussion guidelines
